Product Description
TPU filament (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) is a flexible, rubber-like 3D printing material widely used in fused deposition modeling (FDM/FFF) printers. It belongs to the thermoplastic elastomer family, combining the elasticity of rubber with the processability of plastic. Because of this unique balance, TPU is ideal for producing parts that need to bend, stretch, compress, or absorb impact without breaking.TPU filament typically has a Shore hardness ranging from about 85A to 98A, meaning it can vary from very soft and highly flexible to slightly firm but still bendable. It is known for excellent abrasion resistance, good chemical resistance (especially to oils and greases), and strong durability under repeated mechanical stress. These properties make it suitable for applications like phone cases, wearables, gaskets, seals, protective covers, drone parts, shoe soles, and flexible hinges.
Printing TPU can be more challenging than rigid materials like PLA or PETG because of its flexibility. It requires slower print speeds, careful extrusion control, and often a direct-drive extruder for best results. Bowden setups can work but may struggle with stringing or feeding issues due to filament compression. Proper bed adhesion and temperature tuning are also important, with typical nozzle temperatures ranging from 210°C to 250°C depending on the brand and hardness.
TPU is also valued for its resilience in harsh environments. It maintains flexibility in both low and high temperatures compared to many plastics, and it resists cracking under repeated bending or impact. However, it can absorb moisture from the air, so proper storage in a dry environment is recommended to maintain print quality.
Overall, TPU filament is a versatile engineering-grade material that bridges the gap between rigid plastics and rubber-like materials, making it essential for functional, durable, and flexible 3D printed parts.
